Malloy nails front-runner status in Wait, What? “Quote of the Year” competition

True it is only May 1, 2013, but Governor Malloy has swept into the front-runner position for the Wait, What? “Quote of the Year” competition with his explanation to WTNH Channel 8 news regarding his decision to attend the White House Correspondents Dinner.

“I could do it with state dollars, or I could do it with someone else’s dollars. I thought doing it with somebody else’s dollars made a lot of sense,” Malloy told Channel 8 news.

According to the Channel 8 report, People Magazine paid about $1,000 for the cost of airfare, hotel accommodations and the ticket to the White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

People Magazine explained that they invited Malloy because he would make an interesting guest as a result of the Newtown nightmare.  Or as the editor of People Magazine put it, “with all eyes on the tragedy in Newtown, a story that People readers care deeply about, and that People has been covering intensively, we saw Governor Malloy as someone suddenly playing on a larger stage, someone interesting to our readers, our editors and other guests.”

Malloy defended his decision telling Channel 8, “With all due respect, it’s not a gift, there was an offer to pay to have the Governor of the State of Connecticut, in his capacity as the Governor of the State of Connecticut, attend a very important meeting, session, series of events,” said Governor Malloy.

Channel 8 went on to explain that in addition to the dinner, the Governor attended, “at least one party after the star studded annual event on Saturday night, and quickly came back to Connecticut, a visit by his estimate of about 22 hours.”

While Governor Malloy’s “official schedule” is always made public and Malloy, himself, explained that his trip to the White House Correspondents Dinner was made exclusively in his official capacity as Connecticut’s Governor, his press secretary told CTNewsjunkie and other media outlets that they did not issue a press advisory about Malloy’s trip to D.C because they only inform the media when “Malloy is speaking or has the opportunity to be interviewed. The correspondents’ dinner fit neither category.”

Considering Malloy said the trip was funded by private dollars, it must be assumed that the $1,000 for airfare, accommodations and other expenses covered the governor and his security entourage.

As usual, the controversy is not so much that he attended the dinner…who wouldn’t want to attend the White House Correspondents Dinner…but the political spin around that decision.

Malloy will put any spin he wants to on it, because he’s governor of the world. I’m sure Park and Recreation’s Amy Poehler and Mad Men’s Jessica Pare saw him for the buffoon he really is. Hope they didn’t get sick on their dinner.

    ” A very important meeting”????

  • A 1000.00 covered it all….something is rotten in the Mansion House, and everyone knows it.
Thank you Jonathan for keeping the pressure on these nonsense that is passing for political leadership these days.
    Bravo Jonathan,

The Nutmeg King has taken his freeloading ways to Hartford. You all are seeing what Stamford suffered from for a long, long time. The sense of entitlement, a family trait, is appalling. Chris-Almost-A-Felon-Dodd had to be part of this, unless Dan was doing a Spitzer or hiking the AppalachianTrail…
Dan need body guards to protect him from his own stupidity!

  • msavage

You know, Newtown hadn’t even occurred to me as the reason that People would want Malloy at the event until I read that quote. How very, very sick, sad and frightening. What the hell has become of this country?

  • Striking

Malloy is a certified liar in or out of his official capacity as Governor of the State of Connecticut. Those around him seem to have taken on the same traits. It’s right up there with re-defining spending cap and what constitutes an expenditure. And by the way, there is no way that $1,000 covered that trip – that’s lie number ??? Whatever.

As for the Newtown rationale – that’s rich. The families of Newtown have been on the celeb circuit for months now. Baseball games, Air Force One; trips to DC; meeting with any member of Congress they like; going to the Boston Marathon. “Newtown Bounce” doesn’t begin to cover it for any of them. Bon Vivants all.

Paying one’s own way is for the little people. I fear more than ever for our State.

Making up the rules as they go along…Dan Etsy comes in second with his “spin” on the truth:

“DEEP spokesman Dennis Schain noted that Mr. Esty got paid for a lot of speeches he gave in the years before becoming commissioner and that speech recompense was, well, different than consulting fees.”
Two Dan’s too many n Corrupticut!

“Last week, the congresswoman returned $2,000 in NU campaign contributions along with $1,500 already contributed to her next campaign by NU executives and a company lobbyist.”

She sold herself so cheaply, why not buy her for the next party?
Oh! It’s about” distractions”…not influence peddling!!

Doba is changing his story a bit for The Nutmeg King today. That’s how lies go…they generally get worse, not better.

“Andrew Doba, a spokesman for Malloy, said the administration did not seek an opinion from the State Ethics Office because it sought and received approval last year to attend the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.”
Huh? That is pretty lame, even for a flack like Doba…

    • buygoldandprosper

“To remove a needless distraction when there are far more important public policy issues to deal with, Governor Malloy has made the decision to personally reimburse People Magazine for the costs of his attendance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. He has written a personal check for $1,234.62,” said his spokesman, Andrew Doba.”
WAIT! That was the line used by Elizabeth Etsy!! Can’t doba even come up with an original excuse?!

        Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
        Is there anyone home?

        Come on
        I hear you’re feeling down
        I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again

        I’ll need some information first
        Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
        Your lips move
        But I can’t hear what you’re saying

As noted elsewhere, Dan is just doing on a state level what he did in Stamford…fast and loose. Pretty much always on someone else’s dime. Running from the constant mess he leaves in his wake. Buying votes and favors with public cash/debt.

The arrogance is appalling. From Cathy snagging a $200K job passing out state funds and making repulsive videos, to using state and city autos for personal use (ask Stamfordites how many times ST-1 was seen at ice rinks all over New England when they could not dump the kids off on someone else) to having his house rebuilt a-la John Rowland (the “investigation” was a farce) to the various criminal charges that were dropped for his spawn…sheer arrogance under the guise of “public service”.

The man has not had a real job in his life! A couple of years as an ADA in Brooklyn was spun to sound like a lifetime before the court. The family was neck deep in the first S&L debacle and one can only wonder if the loans were ever paid back… He does not get to enjoy personal property tax, gas taxes, poor train and bus service and an endless list of things we all suffer from. While he shops for property in Stonington, like Chris Dodd, the public struggles under his poor excuse for government.

In short, expect more from Dan. He will be slipperier than ever, but like his kids the more they get away with the bolder they become.

    Expect more slogans.

    Expect more lame excuses.

    Expect more scapegoating.

Expect the worst, because he has two more years to mismanage, loot the dwindling treasury and make more political appointments for his “friends”.
Only a politician like Dan could make the idiot Republicans in this state look good…well, almost good.

“Taxpayers, however, did pay for the governor’s state police security detail that accompanied him on the trip. People Magazine didn’t pay for Malloy’s security, Doba said, but he declined to say how many police officers went with Malloy or at what cost. Dan DeSimone, director of the state’s Washington, D.C., office, joined the governor at the dinner, Doba said. Malloy flew down Saturday and returned less than 24 hours later, on Sunday, Doba said.”

Let’s see. Dan needs security in two airports and Washington DC that we get to pay for. That is a judicious use of taxpayer funds…really, Dan needs security to protect himself from his own stupidity…proof again that Dan is very, very special.
