CT State Representative Tells Gabby Giffords to Stay Out of Newtown

Six days into 2013, 359 days to go in the New Year – and we already have a top contender for the nation’s “A**hole politician of the year” award.

No it is not some right-wing Arizona sheriff or an ultra-conservative right-wing tea-bag southern politician; it is a Connecticut State Representative who serves as one of the House Republican’s Assistant Minority Leaders.

According to a Hartford courant update this afternoon, Connecticut State Representative DebraLee Hovey responded to former Congresswoman Gabby Gifford’s visit Friday with Sandy Hook Elementary school families by getting on her Facebook page from her Florida Saint Pete Beach vacation to write

“Gabby Gifford stay out of my towns!

It appears that Republican State Representative Hovey may have since taken her post down, but the Courant has a screen capture of the earlier post:

Representative Hovey’s Facebook page is here.

The Courant’s coverage is here.

Apparently DebraLee Hovey was mad that she hadn’t been invited, jumping to the conclusion that it was an attempt by some Democrats to try and capitalize on the massacre.

However, according to sources there in Newtown, the town’s REPUBLICAN First Selectwoman was in attendance at the meetings, meetings, by the way, that were closed to the media.

Hovey’s official state legislative bio reads;

“State Representative DebraLee Hovey is a conscientious legislator who takes pride in her commitment to constituent service, her role as a voice for the towns of Monroe and Newtown at the State Capitol and her work on behalf of policies that encourage economic growth and job creation in Connecticut. She was elected to her fifth term in November 2010.

Rep. Hovey is employed as an educational consultant, balancing her practice with public office. Recognizing her leadership qualities and record of achievements, House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero, R-142nd District, appointed Rep. Hovey as an Assistant Minority Leader for the 2009-10 and 2011-12 legislative sessions. In this role, Rep. Hovey helps formulate Caucus’ positions and policy.

She also serves as Ranking Member (House Republican Leader) of the Legislature’s Select Committee on Children. In addition, Rep. Hovey serves as a member of the Appropriations Committee and Judiciary Committee-two of the Legislature’s busiest committees…”

Oh and PS  – Hovey is the Connecticut CO-CHAIR of the conservative, one might say infamous, American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

Hovey was out of line. Not the time to get political.

Do me a favor, don’t send her back to Maine……

The only people commenting on anything ‘Newtown’, should be family of the victims. Too many people are trying to get their names out there.

  • Jon,

The # of comments being posted on the last few threads is reading No Comments when there have been a few posters. Just a heads up.

As far as Giffords coming to Newtown, it is absolute political grandstanding. I’m sure after being shot by a madman she’ll be politically grandstanding about gun violence for a long time.

At this meeting I hope a little praying went on. I’m sure a lot of crying went on, perhaps some healing, and hopefully a lot planning on coming up with ways to combat this violence.

Hovey had to know Giffords was coming. It’s been in all the papers for a few weeks. Hovey’s comments? I really have no words.

Did she buy the towns? If so, maybe we should rethink our representative’s salaries.
