So disheartening. Note how in the past, the class (income-level) and race issues behind the Bridgeport strike were quite obvious; now, those arguments are twisted around, looking-glass-style, to reflect an "achievement gap" that is apparently unrelated to poverty. As for race or ethnicity or immigrant status, again, these are not mentioned as Connecticut schools become more segregated, and teachers in poor districts are paid even less and less for more and more work. The forces of reaction against truly equal educational opportunities have recast the argument into one of "choice," so they say, why shouldn't inner city kids (they're never students) get to go to private, parochial, or prep schools? Never mind that even middle class people can hardly afford these options. But giving out one or two scholarships turns everyone into a proponent of vouchers and school choice, however illusory that is. And the civic institution of public education collapses.
